Title: DIY Mame Arcade Cab...
Post by: Le_renard on August 07, 2008, 12:29:48 AM
The first time I decided to build something with my own hands, it was this Arcade Cab'...
I had never ever touched a driller or anything before (but for hanging a frame I guess...)
The result is not very clean, look terribly diy... but I'm quite proud anyway !!

I will take better picture as soon as I get my camera back. This picture was taken with my iMac iSight webcam ^^
I guess you can't see anything at all on this picture, but let's take it as a teaser !

it doesn't take coins for the moment.. maybe will I had this later...
I had so many work to build the rest that it ddidn't seem necessary, but who knows ?  ;)
The screen is an old 20" tv... i threw an old compaq evo something (P4) inside... take out everything that was unnecessary... no more floopy disk, no more cd/dvd drive...
I stripped XP to the bone, desactivating almost all services and uninstalling everything but the notepad I guess...
I even get rid of the Windows shell and replaced it with a Frontend called Maximus Arcade who can integrate a myriad emulators... but I only use Mame.
I carefully selected two handfuls of games (not those 3,000 and counting dvd nonsense...). A friend of mine helped me building the control panel using two ps2 interfaces (each pin of the interface is linked to a specific keyboard key...)
I had some Scooby-Doo vinyl stickers printed as side-art and marquee...
the cab starts automatically at power-on and the boot must not last more than 20 seconds (strip this windows xp off !)
Oh, and I just got a hacked mouse to use as a spinner (who can play Arkanoid without a spinner ?!!)

Alex Kidd
Legend of Hero Tonma
Bubble Bobble
Rainbow Island
Outrun
NBA Jam
Strider
Ghouls'n'Ghosts
Golden Axe
Dragon Ninja
Raiden
R-Type
X-Men vs Street Fighter
X-Men Children of the Atom
Mortal Kombat
Donkey Kong
Knights of The Round Table
Dungeons & Dragons
Toki
Final Fight
Shinobi

What would be / is yours ?

Hmm.

I'd have to have Galaxians and Asteroids in there I think.  Well done for picking Shinobi, I did a bunch of conversions of that many years ago.

Some decent pictures, at last !

The Mystery Machine itself !
Inspired by a "real" arcade cab' a guy ( Dale Coop ) re-decorated with this picture...
But since I didn't have a cab', I built mine from scratch.

I redesigned the marquee for my cab

Two players, lots of buttons, some of them acting as function keys, etc... No need for a keyboard or a mouse anymore.

The front-end used here is called Maximus Arcade. It's great (and quite cheap)

Hope you like it ! I still have to improve it, focus on details, and add a diy-spinner, etc...
