Title: Spam is getting silly again.
Post by: Drewid on February 14, 2011, 02:45:23 PM
I'll have to see about getting some better system in place.
How would people feel about having to wait to register and answering an "are you human" type question?

How silly is it getting?

People are often reporting having problems getting a new post (they keep searching how to).  I am not sure I like to "stop" people from getting in the forum - if want to make a comment I am still afraid moderation can become a showstopper.

Not really sure what the problem is but if it isn't accounts being hi-jacked, you could get away with asking a human like question "which company produces the cintiq"?

Often forums have stupid questions while registering but I don't know how effective this is in dealing with spammers.

Or add Capta to login

I believe we already have captchas -- didn't you answer one when you registered?

I honestly can not remember. But there is none for logging in. And if the problem is high-jacked accounts, then they are already registered...

So a captcha when logging in might help.

EDIT: There is one for registering. So the code is already in, just flip the switch for logins.

I am not sure the issue is account high-jacking (never heard of that on this site). Will wait for Drew to tell us. :)

No accounts hijacked as far as I know.  Perhaps a question on registering would be good, in fact we may already have the package for that.

I like that question thingy actually -- and maybe ask something about the site that a human that has no knowledge of what is happening on this site would not be able to respond.  Sometimes the captchas (or whatever questions) are simply redirected to a real human to answer, letting the bot do the rest of the work.

We had 900 registrations over the weekend  ::)

Is there a reason a legitimate user would register without doing any posts?

There was for me.

I was registered for I think a few months, maybe more, before my first post, just so that I could login and check unread postings without having to browse the whole forum.

ah yes, that and other stuff like receiving email notifications.

BTW, yesterday there was like a new member every 10 minutes or so.  Sadly, the reCaptcha method is not blocking very much it appears.

At least there isn't that many spam posts and no reported account hijacking so the forum looks relatively clean for the end users. The few spam posts are removed relatively quickly.

I've reset the recaptcha, which had become disabled for some reson ?? :-[

Now looking at an "answer question on registration" package, and a link to an anti-spam database.

There are now a couple of questions on registration. hopefully that will slow down the 500 registrations per day a bit.  ::)

I tested it on the backup forum and it worked after a bit of fiddling with the register.template.php.

Dammit. It doesn't seem to have slowed it down at all.  ???

500 per day, that much?  But was the "questions" answered really OR did they find a way to register without going through the whole chabang? (like a back door)
We have access logs?

Hmmm. there are a lot of "you need to validate your email address" errors in the error log. 99.99% of them belonging to obvious spambots

I've also upgraded to 1.1.13  There were security issues with 1.1.11 apparently.

yeah, the upgrades never seem to give any problems.

Would there be a way to mass-delete spambot users?  We have so many!!!
I have no problem running a database script but:  What criteria(s) could we use for this, or how to distinguish the spambots from the real users?  Some real users out there have not posted. :S

Tricky isn't it. Perhaps we could send out a blanket email first, a "we're going to delete accounts unless you post, sorry for the inconvenience" type thing.
Or run a script to gather names first, pull out the obvious ones, and run another script just to delete those accounts.

we could at least delete the ones that have zero post and no activity since 18 months or so.  It would be a start.

Yeah, sending an email might be interesting -- althought we might be tagged as a "spamming bot"!!! :) tricky tricky

Hum...  I think that there is some sort of tracking of where the user went -- or if they recently went to a place or not.  Maybe a spambot would only visit a single thread or even none -- that would be a good indicator for a spambot. We could use that type of filtering on top of "no activity since 1 month" (in case someone really is getting an account and just waited a week or so before really using it)...

Older than a few months and zero posts would be fine I think.  It's not like any areas are blocked to guests, so joining isn't necessary to read stuff.

Guests cannot see attached images. (i.e. they cannot download attachments) -- (which is a bit annoying of a rule I find).

Interesting, they should be able to according to the permissions set.

Well, I just tried it now, and it works. I remember this was not the case at one point. I gave someone a URL to an image and he could not see it, I tried signing out and then got some sort of "cannot access" error when trying to look at the image again. Also I remember talking to someone that said that he was registered for like a year before posting anything.

We have about 500 users with 1 posts or more. (out of 12000+)

Would be great if it was 12000 active users with at least one build log each ^_^
