Post by: naspc on February 25, 2007, 07:00:18 AM

around 350 dollars, but keep in mind I bought a dremel, messed up like 40 times so I had to keep on rebuying things and I spent over 100 usd on shipping alone

I could do it again though for under 100 after what I have learned from this project

i spent €120 for a used Wacom UD-1218-R means: Ultrapad Digitizer II A3 12*18".
i have seen some week ago a GD-1218-R (Intuos I A3, 12*18") has gone on Ebay at €166, bargain!

hey switz was that 350 total, monitor wacom, tools etc?

i was planning on using a introus3 9x12, they are not cheap.  around 380 just for the introus3 alone.
but everybody seems to have better results with them.

It's worth searching on ebay for an old PC with one in the bundle, especially if the listing isn't done very well.
You can sell the PC on afterwards, probably for the same amount.

does anybody its worth it to buy a brand new wacom introus3 and dismantle it?

Ive just bought a new intuos3 A4 and am going to dismantle it.

It all depends on what your going for. There are builds on here that are huge, and others that are more botch jobs. I got a cheap monitor. £50 with shipping plus £20 which came to £70. I bought one tablet, but it was ABD for Mac, I got it for 109, and I sold it for 190, so I made £80 profit there. I spent £7 on a fan. I spent another 220 on a brand new Intuos3. Plus another £25 for Import Tax and Handling cause I got it from the US. Still cheaper than buying over here thou I think. I spent another £15 on various wires and connectors. I also bough a soldering iron which cost me £13 plus P+P which was £2. The Tablet Arrives tomorrow, and I think I will need to do some more fabrication, but hopefully I wont spend anymore.

The point is that I probably spent more than I needed to, I bought the wrong fan, which cost me 2quid to replace, I also had to double order from DIY beamer cause I got the wrong parts. I of course got the wrong tablet then splashed out on a new Intuos3. I probably spent the best part of 50quid more than I needed to.

Overall Ive spent roughly 350quid. But I could have done it all for cheaper. It depends what you want. For me Its more for the fun of it than for scrimping. I enjoy making things and I hope to end up with a decent item.

The moral of the story, check, check check and check again before you buy. Post here before you buy and we can point out errors, I was rash in some of my buys. My best buy was the screen for 50quid.

stupid American ??? stupid American ??? stupid American ??? stupid American ???

lol quid is the slang British Term for Pounds. Pounds Sterling.

I just got my tablet today, and it will require a large amount of cutting into the case to get it all to. And it wont be a flush fit back together, there will be a 1cm gap all the way around.

pounds?  pound of what?  u guys use a unit of measurement for currency?
is it like the barter system "i'll trade you a pig for near mint intuos3"?

just kidding!  thanks chems!
can't wait to see the pics of the build.

Thats what Ive got, I highly recommened. I bought my tablet from a 10pack from that shop someone was selling on ebay.

The only problem is that you need to use some spacers to get it all in the case. And you will need to cut through the case to get the screen showing, and the FFC out the back and then mount them on the rear. Also the shortcut buttons will need modding for them to work.

But its all very doable and I shall be doing so as soon as I get some bigger screws to space it all out.

I keep trying to spend as little as possible.  I keep getting tripped up because I wont put up a little extra cash to get this going.  sigh.

too frugal to be cheap. ( or productive.)

Mess

This is my first build so I'd feel kinda bad for gutting a newer tablet. There seem to be alot of 1212s floating around eBay as of late. I've seen a few go for $65 and under, but that's usually not including shipping or cables/pens. And a couple like that black 1218 linked earlier are as-is without any testing. I might throw out a couple bucks on a gamble I could salvage for parts later, but there's a limit on how much I'll toss at a potential TV dinner tray.  :P

Since my build needs to be Mac-compatible, I've been watching for GDs because they have an OS X driver. I'm debating if it's worth getting a cheaper serial and an adapter or splurging on a USB. I just know the tablet has to be in working condition when I get it. The monitor's a different story so I can probably offset the total cost there

Its worth going for a new item to save yourself hassle with your product already been broken then wondering whats gone wrong. And it looks a lot nicer when finished.
