Title: The Nastiq
Post by: naspc on March 01, 2007, 01:45:31 AM
Just got my monitor today the good ol' Dell 1503fp. looks like its in pretty good shape no dead pixels i think, none that i can see.
i used the people switz suggested, (IT BETTER STAY WORKING SWITZ....... j/k) very prompt delivery, spent 70 for it and 21 for shipping.
tested it and looks great, was kinda iffy on the size, wanted a 19 or bigger but due to money constraints and lack of experience i opted to try the tested version before i take
a bigger financial gamble.

well here it is................

believe it or not that photo is from my cell phone, not bad i think.

ordered the intous3 9x12 yesterday, should be shipping soon!  hooray!
just out of curiosity i searched the web for a better pic of the thing (just to verify something chem brought in
his build  http://forum.bongofish.co.uk/index.php?topic=191.new#new ) and noticed something...that thing is huge!
i was looking at this pic from the wacom website and noticed how small the guys arm seemed on top of it!  can't wait till get started.

going strip my monitor using switz's guide Saturday, thanks again man!
till then I'm gonna play some supreme comander and use the dual monitor display option!

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: naspc on March 05, 2007, 03:35:52 PM
wow easier then i thought....but wait...houston we have a problem.

hey switz if you read this, i am following your guide, very detailed by the way, i am stuck on in between pic number dsc01021 and dsc01022.
how the heck did you separate the lcd from the plastic and metal cage aorund it?

for the most part damn that was 2 easy.....sweet, thanks switz.

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: Chems on March 05, 2007, 04:11:05 PM
Even with out reading it, I remember him saying there are some metal clips on that cage that you have to pry out for the LCD to come out.

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: Switz on March 05, 2007, 11:59:41 PM
Yeah, without looking, there are some metal tabs and under them are some copperish tabs right?  pry open the metal part

Ill check to see if thats what your talking about

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: naspc on March 06, 2007, 02:04:47 PM
yeah those, so i pry them open?

also how do i remove the ribbon cable?

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: Chems on March 06, 2007, 03:58:17 PM
Pry them off!

If you mean a Flexi Flat Cable, then there is a little gate, you flick it up and the FFC will come out. Drew has made a thread on how to do it right as a lot of people break the gates. Use your fingernail not a tool so your finger nail will bend and give rather than the Gate break.

Thread: http://forum.bongofish.co.uk/index.php?topic=74.0

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: Switz on March 06, 2007, 10:27:45 PM
Yes, be careful, they break easily and dont fiddle with it, only open and shut as needed.

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: naspc on March 06, 2007, 11:55:47 PM
i was looking at that thread but wasnt sure of what type it was.
thanks guys.

Title: Re: The Nastiq

yep it worked.

wacom coming tomorrow, cant wait to break........i mean take it apart.

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: naspc on March 08, 2007, 03:10:45 PM
still trying to get my lcd dismantled.
i am afraid of handling this thing!
i am stuck getting the lcd seperated from the plastic piece.   help me please!.

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: naspc on March 08, 2007, 03:22:03 PM
never mind, it seems the plastic piece is kinda glued on the back of the lcd, rather the metal sheet before the lcd.
i used some muscle and freed it from its plastic cage.

anybody know of a place in the us for a fcc extender?  i tried diybeamer but i think they r in australia.

oh for the record switz is dead on with his guide on dismantling the dell 1503fp, good job man!
little things here and there were fuzzy but i got help from you guys or just figured it out.

next the wacom!
in that experiment i will be using rumi's guide http://forum.bongofish.co.uk/index.php?topic=114.45

so get ready for some very very stupid question rumi...hehehehehe

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: Chems on March 08, 2007, 09:25:38 PM
Feel free to ask I as well about the Intuos as Rumi gives a brief guide only.

DIY beamer is in Austria, and its the only place, and they are super quick on postage. Couldnt recommened them enough.

thank.

on another note, i think someone stole my wacom from my front door!
ups said they delivered it this morning, but no package!
WTF!
I went to the local ups center and they said they will call me in the morning!
that really sucks i was ready to start testing. :-\

Well all i can do is hope for the best.

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: Drewid on March 09, 2007, 09:54:09 AM
Man that sucks.  Did they get a signiture? perhaps it went to a neighbour by accident?  We had a DHL package which we sent to the States and it ended up in South Africa, happens a lot apparently, the DHL codes are nearly the same.

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: naspc on March 09, 2007, 05:39:45 PM
i don't think so, the info said they left it at the door.

Well you should be able to claim for that. Couriers are meant to get signatures for everything.

wacom can never stop us........viva la revolution!

just for the record wacom didn't intercept my tablet, but the pest control company downstairs did!
yep the "replacement" ups guy delivered to the commercial part of my building!
they are closed right now, but at least i know where it is. :)

hey dynamic i'll keep the ninja suit in mind.

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: naspc on March 12, 2007, 09:59:08 AM
yeah just got my intous!  now for testing!

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: naspc on March 12, 2007, 11:08:18 AM
did some quick testing, i put the gutted lcd on top of the wacom just to see how it worked.  i was rather shocked on how the wacom was able to detect
the pen through the lcd screen.

i tried the metal sheet in between the lcd and wacom, guess what it doesn't work.
heres a little video on how it went not to clear but i was excited and wanted to share with the world!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idMt1if69iM

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: Tanassi on March 12, 2007, 11:24:58 AM
nice test, you use Artrage too! cool software!
i don't think the Wacom will work with metal over it.
i tryed both on Intuos I and Ultrapad to put an aluminiom foil (for food) over the sensitive surface, not connected to earth, and they stopped to work. so i'm 100% sure it will not work.
i've learned this lesson: aluminium foil stops Wacom to work, it'll stop interference between monitor and Wacom? may be!  ;D

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: naspc on March 12, 2007, 11:28:23 AM
it will stop interference, but it won't stop at that.  i think it will totally not pick up the pen at all.
i don't think the lcd is the prob, i think it the circuitry thats causing the interference, maybe sheild them from the wacom might help or maybe relocate them
further form the wacom.
art rage is a nice program, i saw you using it and thought dang thats a cool app!

Good work! Be careful now wont ya!

Whats the next steps? Are you going to try and polish off the cover for the screen to poke through?

Title: Re: The Nastiq

i think i am going to do something like ya3.
http://forum.bongofish.co.uk/index.php?topic=15.0

i really want to make it like yours, but i don't know if i can modify the case like you did.

Title: Re: The Nastiq

Send me your stripped case and I will do it for you for a small fee!

hmmmm very tempting.

let me see how everything is striped, and i'll let you know.
i really like how yours came out.

oh by the way, you used the intous 3 9x12 right?
if you did how did you get the thing striped?

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: naspc on March 13, 2007, 01:18:41 PM
stupid utility knife....of all the m'fing things to happen.

i had to buy the shortest most expensive one in the world!

i was half way done cutting the first l shape sticky tape thingy and then could reach deep enough, crap. :-\

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: Chems on March 13, 2007, 11:46:27 PM
It just pulls apart.

Undo the FFC's to the touch stripes first, They are the pull foward type not the pull upwards type.

Then you just need to start pulling stuff off. Try to get your hand inside what ever it is your pulling and apply direct pressure rather than pulling a corner.

And you can have the whole thing in pieces.

Just take a deep breath and pull!

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: naspc on March 14, 2007, 01:53:04 PM
thanks chem.  it took awhile but its free.

talk about the jitters!  my hands were shaking the whole time.

heres some pics, gonna do some testing tomorrow.

step 1: tear down COMPLETED!

oh chem one of my friends knows auotcad so i asked him to design something for me.
theres this place that i am going to have them make the case from my friends autocad design.
http://www.pololu.com/laser_cutting.html
they look kinda cheap.  we'll see.

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: Chems on March 14, 2007, 02:13:58 PM
Why make a case when you have such a lovly case already? All it needs is a couple of hours of work. And if your lucky you mite not even need to cut out the space for the screen like I did.

You can seprate the layer between the front panel, and the panel thats stuck beneath that was well. Its just stuck on with sticky tape. Removing that gains you another 5mm. But you will have to reattach the screw threads later on. Then if you remove the spacers from the bottom half of the case that gains you another 5-10mm and your away. Stick your backlight slab in and LCD and you have a case!

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: naspc on March 14, 2007, 02:21:42 PM
you really think so?
i mean its bad enough i gutted it but to cut it up and risk fing it up?
i really have to think this through.

how did you exactly fit the screen in?  does it protrude above the casing?  or is it flush?  if its flush against the casing
is there a covering over it?
i know you had to cut it, did you actually cut out the screen size?
sorry if i don't make any sense or if these are stupid questions, i just got out from work.
thanks chem.

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: Chems on March 14, 2007, 08:33:58 PM
It is flush yes.

Im covering mine with clear arylic, but it may be that if you use the right kit you dont need to cut the screen area out at all but polish off the black stuff like Drew said.

The screen size is the active area which is already marked out.

If your going to be getting custom case built anyway, what does it matter if you f-up your intous3 case?

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: naspc on March 15, 2007, 01:55:04 PM
you know, i guess it doesn't matter. i might have to hack it up any way if i want the touch strip and buttons.

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: naspc on March 15, 2007, 03:11:38 PM
did a test stack/fitting (trying to imitate chem) but i don't think its gonna work.  i think chem used a different lcd after his broke.
it seems the board attached to lcd screen will be to long.  it doesn't protrude pass the case but it extends to the part of the case
where it starts to slope down.  i attached some pics for reference.  oh by the way i found that if you want to move your lcd around
for testing or what ever, you should put it on something that will keep you lcd and circuitry stationary.  i use the bagging that my wacom came in and sat the lcd
on top.

the board extends to far down.

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: Chems on March 16, 2007, 12:03:07 AM
Looking at that pic Id say they arent the same, the 1503 dell and my 1503 Compaq HP thing.

Mine does get very close to the bottom, but that top LCD PCB is quite a bit smaller in height. You may find if you just bend those edge connectors to gain an extra 10mm (they are meant to be bent as they are bent behind the LCD normally) you will be able to close the case up.

Have you tested for jitters yet?

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: naspc on March 16, 2007, 01:43:20 AM
i've tested the lcd ontop of the wacom before i stripped it.  there were some jitters not much.
but i have not tried it since, i am waiting for the fcc extender to come in, just ordered it today.

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: Switz on March 16, 2007, 02:09:47 AM
My ffc took around 5-7 days and it was even from Austria.

Fast imo.

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: naspc on March 16, 2007, 01:29:02 PM
wow that quick? i bought the one you recommended from diy-beamer.
cool, it will give me time to do some passive testing and design an enclosure.
can't wait, i feel like the hard part is done, the tear down i mean.

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: naspc on March 16, 2007, 01:40:11 PM
this goes out to anybody using the intous 3 9x212 tablet.  so chem if you r reading this, what and where exactly is the read are on the damn thing?  i see some lines on the sensor board but i don't know what each one is for.

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: Chems on March 17, 2007, 02:29:33 PM
You mean the active area? Just plug the wire back in, put it in your PC and find out. But if you look at the top right corner. The box that is closest to the edge is the active area.

read height, mine had a decent read height of about 1-1.5cm.

Title: Re: The Nastiq

the lcd board can't fit in the intous case.
hence, i can not go your route :P

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: Chems on March 18, 2007, 03:30:22 PM
I bet it would, if you bend those FFC going into the screen carefully. And you remove that inner casing like I have to allow some extra height space.

Title: Re: The Nastiq

man i got the fcc cable from diy yesterday, damn that was fast!  faster then anything i ordered form the states!
well anyway i ordered the wrong thing!   well half of the wrong thing, i had one window tab up with one thing (fcc cable 20pin .5mmpitch) and another that switz sent me (thanks) and guess what i ordered form the

What's the material?

Sketchup... another great program

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: naspc on March 22, 2007, 03:00:18 PM
if i go the laser cutting route it would have to be acrylic plastic.
damn, designing  this case is proving to be difficult, so many things to consider.

@tba yeah sketchup is cool, pretty user friendly.

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: Chems on March 22, 2007, 03:44:55 PM
Acrylic is really easy to work with.

But if your willing to go to these lengths to make a new case I dont see why you cant work on your existing case. Im a broken record I know.

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: naspc on March 22, 2007, 03:55:21 PM
i really like your design, it kicks ass!  i just want my own mark in this diy.
plus i don't know if its even possible.  i am going with a single piece design, i know i have 2 pic, but they the top and bottom.
i don't know if there is a process or machines that can do this.  so your design is still an option.

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: Tanassi on March 22, 2007, 05:30:01 PM
if you want to use a single piece you have to use a NC milling machine that has 3 axes and can work in 3D.
the laser cutting is a flat working process (2 axes), it cuts across the material side by side, all those sockets are impossible to do with laser cutting process.
altough you cut 2 or 3 (or more) slabs of material and glue them together.
... Vince

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: naspc on March 22, 2007, 09:16:12 PM
NC milling machine or cnc milling machine?
thanks for the info.

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: Chems on March 22, 2007, 09:31:34 PM
Same thing I think, Computer Numerically Controlled, or just Numerically Controlled. Just a shorter version.

Really decent vacum forming could acheive those results which is dead cheap to do once youve made a mould, which you can make out of wood. As long as you dont have and shadow angles.

Obviously Injection moulding is the best option, but very expensive to get a 1 off mould done.

Post by: naspc on April 01, 2007, 12:45:04 AM
Nope, no testing today......but I have realized something though.  The dream case I wanted to get milled out seems to be a pipe dream.
so as a back up...yes chemS, I think I will be going the chemstiq direction.
I wanted to do the custom case because 1)lazy 2)lazy 3) lazy.
I figure why lift another finger when I can have it done for me?
So I guess I will be figuring how to cram all that wonderfulness into the the ittsy bittsy wacom case.
I hope it comes out half as nice as chemS.

Hheheh. A good decision, if you need any help with what to do you know were to come.

since you offered to help chems.............
how do you get the layer right below the casing and right above the sensor to come loose?  its the layer that has the touch strip and buttons.

Post by: Chems on April 01, 2007, 09:33:19 PM
PULLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its tapped on by big stripes of powerful tape. Get an edge up and slide your hand in and apply direct pressure to each area.

PS. My offer is still there if you want me to sort your case out for you.

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: Chems on May 17, 2007, 09:55:49 PM
I can see I may have to pass over my Best Build Title!

Only one problem/extra bit of design, youve cut hole for the touch stripes, but you can have a thin layer of something over them, like a bit of perspex, I guess thats what your going to do anyway.

Its very modesqe with the whole see through case thing.

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: Drewid on May 26, 2007, 04:48:22 PM
OOOOOOOOOoooooooohhh   yeaaaaahh.

They're a hot cake sort of thing a bit like a thick small pancake with holes in the top,  eaten toasted.
You can keep slathering butter and jam onto them and it melts down into the holes untill its full.

mmmmmmmmmmmmm

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: Chems on June 02, 2007, 11:31:20 PM
The Brits, even wars we werent in.

Brits pwn world.

We even took back some islands thousands of miles from home with nothing more than a couple of pallets tied together with some beer kegs for extra floation and the crazy marines.

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: Switz on June 03, 2007, 01:59:31 AM
omg!
  some islands

we bought Alaska for like $2149.00 USD

Thats less then the cintiq costs

and no, you did not win every war.

We had to come and save your ass all the time and the American Revolution, sorry, you lost lol

Title: Re: The Nastiq

is that why we rebelled?

Also,
why does all you parts cost twice as much as ours??

Title: Re: The Nastiq
Post by: Chems on June 03, 2007, 04:49:06 PM
Why is 1 of our pounds worth 2 of your dollars :P

Title: Re: The Nastiq

well i'm an american and i know i love queen.  I have all their albums.  bohemian rapsody is one of my favorite songs.  and the only reason one of your pounds is worth more is because it buys more.
