Hey John,
the lcd screen (15" westinghouse) I got has the same u shape tube lights as well. Kinda shocking at first.
but seems that there needs to be a certain amount of space between the screen and lights otherwise the light shines through the screen,
leaving 6 white horizontal lines. So far i don't know how I could fix that.
looks like i might need to get a different monitor as well.

Ive given up on the medion tablet and its evil shakey ways, but luckily ive managed to pick up an A4 Intuos (with serial cable) off ebay for £40. All i need to buy is a serial to usb adapter and hope everything fits into the customised medion case with the window!! Ive got two monitors to try it with so fingers crossed!

A piece if thin paper over the tubes might diffuse the light a bit?

Could just find a couple of tubes that fit in the inverter board, ive got about 6 sets of lights here from different monitors and some of them are mx and match. The U-shaped ones do break pretty easy.
