Well our new host has options for a couple of WIKIs built in.  It'd be a bit of a trek to start off with getting templates to suit and so on, but it would be SOOO useful for the frequently asked questions and the quest for jitterlessness*

I'm thinking that only registered users should be able to edit, (I have no idea how easy that would be.)
The first choice is between dokuwiki and mediawiki.
Mediawiki seems to have a bunch of good plugins, and is probably the widest used (so less likely to have any bugs), but may be a little harder to use?
Docuwiki has neat text file storage and no database.

Any thoughts anybody?

Wiki is good.  Make sure you hook a search engine to it (i.e. use google).  I would produce a few pages (spare time depending).

My first thoughts to MediaWiki for its feature list -- but DokuWiki seems simpler on the maintenance side. I think for your case, I would opt for DokuWiki right away.

They have tons of ways to hook for authentication -- if SMF uses a SQL database for its user list, then dokuwiki can use that (you might need to tweak the SQL statement, but I do not see this as a problem at all).

WIKIIIII!!!

And perhaps you could set up a few tutorials, and gather all the stickies into one spot, and get a gallery going of the best builds - generally showcase the bredth of the forums in one spot and make it more accessible.

I've been bangin my head against the "get the wiki working properly" wall since I started this thread.

I decided on DokuWiki.  Unfortunately the webhost provides an older version of this which doesn't work with current templates, so I updated DokuWiki to the latest stable that version.

It still doesn't work.

More digging.  Older versions of PHP have a bug that doesn't parse some bits of template code properly.  The latest version the host provides is 5.2  But that's still before the bugfix, (5.3.1).
I don't have the sort of lower level acces with this account that is needed to upgrade the PHP so I've asked their support guys if it's possible for them to do that.

If no then it'll be mediawiki

Your head must hurt.    Embarrassed

To fix DokuWiki -- have you tried Duct Tape?  Does marvels on simtiqs.

ah well,... having to resort to mediaWiki... -- more powerful, more features and the most popular/biggest Wiki in the world... -- hum...  I think I can use that.

Well, apparently  PHP 2.2.4 ought to be OK. So the reason it's not working is a mystery.

Oh good.   Embarrassed

It's always the permissions with linux/unix systems   Roll Eyes

So we have a wiki with a theme.   I've just got a few default things to replace, and get Bobs to rig up the registered user list from here.

Wiki logo is cool! Just tried to login using my forum credentials to start typing articles but I guess this "integration" is still to be done -- right?  I'm reading on Doku syntax right now.

Yeah the proper registration will probably be Monday, but you should be able to do stuff now.  You're showing up in the @user group.

yeah -- I actually registered through the Wiki.  But I suppose this is a "temporary" procedure?

Thanks for all the hard work and thanks again for bringing up a Wiki engine!

I'll get Bobs to make it grok the user list here.   Though dokuwiki doesn't use SQL for it's data it can be made to read from an SQL database.
