..and which board are we talking about exactly? is this a PCB the LCD Panel or some other board of the monitor? What is the LCD Panel model and make? (the picture posted has not enough resolution for me to read the stickers)

Here it is. Its the board that you plug the VGA cable and power into. I'm the monitor is a Compaq 1501, the panel I think is a Chunghwa CLAA150XG 02. There are also some other codes on that clear sticker, but I think they're just serial numbers.

Quite a blast! I wonder what happened(?) Yes, it's a capacitor.
This looks repairable at first sight (if no other parts are "internally" destroyed). I wish I could just walk into your room and try to fix it.
Other than that, it might be worth buying a cheap LVDS board on ebay (someone sells them for like 30$US+shipping) but you already threw in money, and this would be another "guess" (although, on the jitter side, it seemed nice -- you did not try with the backlight yet, right?).

Hmmm, the monitor no longer accepts any input now that I pulled the capacitor; So I'm guessing that it wasn't the real problem and I broke it when I was trying to diagnose why the screen was displaying colours weirdly (maybe a static discharge? It worked fine when I tested it before taking it apart). On a side note, the monitor itself only cost about US$30, so I'm going to sell on the first monitor I bought, and wait for another 1501 to hopefully come along. This time, I will try to be more careful

Okay bernard, you've been supporting me this whole way, so do you think I should buy a laptop screen and a controller for it and save myself the trouble of acquiring another 1501 monitor? I'm seriously considering it now because after looking up some parts and finding that I could get all the stuff for NZ$100!

NZ$100 ? how much is that US$ (or CAD$) -- and is this a better resolution than 1024x768 ? It may be worth the trouble -- again, it is always a bet, so you have to think about it. Of course there is always the fun of playing with these things!

About USD$70 before shipping, which would probably push it up to $100. The screen is 1400x1050. This seems like a pretty good option at the moment as sourcing 15" monitors with external power bricks in New Zealand is very hard!

I personally like this resolution - this is exactly the resolution I am targeting for my build. (which I have to get back to eventually) - If the LVDS comes with it (and works with that LCD) I would go for it. But again, it is a choice. If it was 1024x768, I wouldn't buy it. Would you mind telling us from where you are getting this nice stuff? (after you order it if you do -- in case someone else reads this and order it right-away).

Wow! I just found a Dell 1503FP for about US$40. Decision time, 1024x786 res or 1400x1050? But first, I really must put that Compaq TFT5030 up for auction before I proceed.

Update time! I sold the TFT5030, now the IBM ITSX95C panel and a cheap ebay LVDS controller are on the way. I got the panel from here: http://pchub.com/uph/laptop/517-15335-1372/IBM-ITSX95C-LCD-15.0-SXGA-.html?I hope it works! If it does, its seems like it would be great for the purposes of people here at bongofish I only wish I had found this first, I would have totally bough it

Wow! 38$US is a very good price for a non-ebay LCD Panel. Especially with that resolution (1400x1050) which is ideal for a 15 inches Cintiq I find. Is the shipping costly? When you ordered the LVDS board, you mentioned that LCD Panel model, right?

Yup, they said that they had tried it on the same panel and it worked. I haven't actually paid for the controller yet, I sent them a message in the "request total" thing on ebay, asking them to also include their power adapter and a DVI cable in the order, and a link to the panel's datasheet, but I haven't yet heard back from them! That is the right way to go about contacting them right? I'm used to using the good ol' kiwi made trademe rather than Ebay . Oh yeah, the shipping was US$20. So not that much i think?

Exciting, I got the screen today. On the outside, it looks wonderful! Now just waiting for the LVDS controller which is expected to be here in about a week On a side note, are inverter connectors universal? From the pictures I see on the internet they look pretty similar. I just had a sudden though of using the broken LCD's backlight and diffuser as it has twice as many bulbs as this new screen, and no random bits of grounding and structural metal on its casing. I was going to use it as backlight for a wet plate (which is also a cool project for anyone into film/traditional darkroom photography).

There are 2 or 3 standard connectors I have seen. And if you only have 1 CCFL, there is this one connector that is really used quite a lot.
