Why do people have problems with FCCs? Why do they need to be very long?

In my case it was to get the signal from the driver to the LCD, the existing cables were too short.

Is this the combination of parts I need to bridge between a female socket and the male end of a FFC?

The two connectors on a PCB serve as a gender changer, right?
