I'll have to see about getting some better system in place. How would people feel about having to wait to register and answering an "are you human" type question?

How silly is it getting?
People are often reporting having problems getting a new post (they keep searching how to). I am not sure I like to "stop" people from getting in the forum - if want to make a comment I am still afraid moderation can become a showstopper.

Not really sure what the problem is but if it isn't accounts being hi-jacked, you could get away with asking a human like question "which company produces the cintiq"?
Often forums have stupid questions while registering but I don't know how effective this is in dealing with spammers.

I believe we already have captchas -- didn't you answer one when you registered?

I honestly can not remember. But there is none for logging in. And if the problem is high-jacked accounts, then they are already registered... So a captcha when logging in might help. EDIT: There is one for registering. So the code is already in, just flip the switch for logins.

No accounts hijacked as far as I know. Perhaps a question on registering would be good, in fact we may already have the package for that.

I like that question thingy actually -- and maybe ask something about the site that a human that has no knowledge of what is happening on this site would not be able to respond. Sometimes the captchas (or whatever questions) are simply redirected to a real human to answer, letting the bot do the rest of the work.

Is there a reason a legitimate user would register without doing any posts?

There was for me. I was registered for I think a few months, maybe more, before my first post, just so that I could login and check unread postings without having to browse the whole forum.

ah yes, that and other stuff like receiving email notifications.
BTW, yesterday there was like a new member every 10 minutes or so. Sadly, the reCaptcha method is not blocking very much it appears.
At least there isn't that many spam posts and no reported account hijacking so the forum looks relatively clean for the end users. The few spam posts are removed relatively quickly.

I've reset the recaptcha, which had become disabled for some reson ?? Now looking at an "answer question on registration" package, and a link to an anti-spam database.
