I've found someone willing to part with an old UD1212-R for cheap.  the problem?  no cables or pen.  the pen shouldn't be too much of a problem, but i havn't been able to find out what cables this thing uses.  IS it jsut a standard serial? for that matter, anyone have a great source for the pen (and cable if it's proprietarty) in the US?

Wacom US still sell the pens.  It's an "erasing duoswitch".  They do one with a soft nib as well, but you'll need to get replacement nibs at the same time, they will wear out.

Its negative center 9-12 V (any) and 200 mA

Make sure it is a negative center

http://www.playersboutique.com/images/FX/FulltoneUSA/Fulltone_acc_FPS1Adapter_lg.jpg  (see the Circle with the plus and minus, make sure it is open to the minus.  Btw, that is a perfect one if you ahve that 9V 200ma negative center)

a little more research combined with the information you guys have given me is making me think this isn't quite the deal i had hoped.  changing the subject a little, did i read somewhere that the "penabled" tablet PC pens can be used interchangably with the UD-1212-r and all the little UD kiddies?

Hi Bubba,

if you still need the cable you can build it yourself, here's the scheme:

ok is in italian, i did it for an italian guy who asked me.
translation:
lato tavoletta = tablet end
lato computer = computer end
negativo alim. = negative supply
positivo aliment. = positive supply
connettore D-sub 9 pin maschio = D-sub 9 pin male connector
connettore D-sub 9 pin femmina = D-sub 9 pin female connector

note: pin 5 of the computer end and negative supply are connected together

hope this helps you... Vince

Tanassi, that is a very helpful bit of information!  I count 8 through connections, so maybe it's time to get out my spool of UTP and make a $4 trip to radio shack.  After looking around for a while, i think the cheapest way to get a pen is to buy a ud-0608 on ebay, and use it's pen.  anyone else have a better/cheaper source?

For some reason the eraser is really important to me.  Yes, i know how easy it is to switch to it, or to change the side switch for it, but i never said i was a reasonable person.  I've been useing an intuos3 on my computer for a while now (originally i was going to use it in my upcoming build, but i just can't make myself put it at risk.  at least not yet) and couldn't live without the eraser.  I'm not too worried though, as I've seen several 6x8 ud series for around $20 plus $10 or so for shipping.  so a tablet and a pen for the price of jsut the new pen.
