So I'm really interested in doing this but I have some logistical questions.
Shoot me down if I'm heading down an ugly path.....

I have two older laptops at home that I was thinking I maybe able to pull this off with. (Dell LS, Toshiba ??)
I thought I could use software like MaxiVista (www.maxivista.com) to get my extended desktop from my desktop to the notebook via USB-2-USB network line to maintain a good bandwidth. Then rock a good old USB wacom behind the display.

I have checked out every angle of fl0's build and think it is awesome but I'd like to be able to use it in conjunction to my desktop pc also.

Any thoughts on this?

TIA :: Mathew.

So are you thinking of installing the wacom into a working laptop rather than just pulling a laptop screen?

That is what I was thinking.  Do you know of any sources for a VGA to Laptop LCD converter?
Do you think my original idea is even possible?

I've been reading some things about these usb 2 usb networking cables being flakey and slow.
Thinking maybe adding a nic to the workstation and using a crossover cable may be a better idea.

............god i want this to work.

Well I guess either would work.    If you want to use the whole screen area than the tablet is going to be bigger than the screen, as there are areas around the edges of the sensor area that are necessary so can't be removed.  So your case would need to take account of that.

There are driver boards that will driver a laptop screen from a VGA signal, so you could remount a laptop screen in another case though I don't remember anyone having done that yet.   They are specific to a particular LCD model number,  so you'd need to know that before ordering.
I seem to remember someone finding them on ebay under LVDS card or LVDS interface card or something similar.

You have to be aware that stripping monitors is a delicate process and breakages are fairly common.  If the laptops work then there's a risk it might end up not working.   You might consider it better to sell one or swap it for a monitor?  Something to think about anyhow.

Thanks for the info Drewid!  I'm not too worried about breaking the laptops.  If I kill them no big deal.
If this plan doesn't work I'll have to shag the Dell that everyone is using.  We have tons of them in the 15 and 17 size.

I'm going to test the additional monitor software tonight.  I'll let you know how it goes in the morning.

They have a few of them, but this one looks good.

A few others you can look at

I may be able to get one for me, but I don't think I can get any number of them.
I'll see what I can do.

Not that I have given up on the Laptop idea, but I did secure a 15" monitor just in case things fall apart with the monitor idea.
It is a Dell 15" 1501FP.  Not exactly ideal but I think it may have some potential.  External powersupply and a decent tilt/swivel base that could make drawing very comfortable.
